Duke Takes No. 1 After Notre Dame Upset | Cal Men's Lacrosse Calls For Help

For the first time in 2024, we have a new No. 1 team in The People’s Top 20.

After Notre Dame’s upset loss to Georgetown in overtime on Sunday, the Duke Blue Devils (4-0) have claimed the top spot in our weekly rankings. Check out the full rankings below, and click the image to join the debate on Instagram.

So far this season, Duke has collected wins against Bellarmine, High Point, St. Joe’s and Jacksonville. The Blue Devils are the only Division I team averaging more than 20 goals per game, and their average margin of victory is 11.25 goals per game.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame falls all the way to eight. The loss to Georgetown was shocking, as the Irish offense sputtered in a stunning loss at home. The Hoyas did a remarkable job keeping both Kavanagh brothers in check throughout this contest, as Pat finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and Chris had just one goal.

Pat Kavanagh’s goal did not come until the 0:39 mark in the fourth quarter, and the player who was most responsible for shutting him down all game was Ty Banks — a freshman defenseman making just his fourth collegiate start.

For highlights and a deeper dive on Banks’ overall performance, check out our latest YouTube video:

Banks is the biggest reason why Georgetown is back in our rankings at No. 12 this week. Keep your eye out for this 6-0, 200-pound Canadian close defender, because he clearly has what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the best players in the country.

🤝 Save Cal Men’s Lacrosse

The men’s club lacrosse team at the University of California, Berkeley is asking for your help. Matt Currie, President of the Cal Men’s Lacrosse Alumni Society, claims in a petition that the program has been “stripped bare of support and resources” by the University’s Recreational Club Sports department.

The petition is seeking 2,000 signatures and sits roughly 350 supporters shy of that goal as of the time of this publication.

A list of impediments are outlined in the petition, including reduced practices, limited field space and travel services, as well as financial failures and medical training inadequacies. The petition also lists desired actions the team would like the University to take moving forward.

❤️ HS Team Supports Wheelchair Lacrosse

A group of lacrosse players at Roslyn High School in New York have started a nonprofit called “Lacrosse My Heart,” and they recently held a fundraiser for a local wheelchair lacrosse team called the Long Island Hammerheads.

The story was featured on FOX News this week.

The co-founder of the nonprofit is Zach Mashaal, a goalie in the Class of 2026.

“We are community-based programs,” Hammerheads player Joe Slaninka told FOX News. “There are not a lot of great fundraising opportunities for us, so when organizations like Zach’s come to us and say, “Hey, we want to help you out and do something,’ it’s huge.”

📈 NJIT Just Keeps Winning

One of the best stories in college lacrosse this season is the sudden rise of the NJIT Highlanders. At the moment, they are the only 5-0 team in NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse.

By comparison, NJIT won just five games in four seasons from 2020-2023. Last week, the Highlanders broke a program record for single-season wins (4) when they beat Monmouth in overtime.

NJIT is now coming off an 11-10 win over Manhattan, with games against Wagner and Lindenwood coming up the next two weekends. They’re currently receiving votes to be included in The People’s Top 20.
