💥 EPIC GAME OF THE WEEK

Virginia, Maryland Clash at College Park on Saturday | Chris Gray Traded & More

We’ve got a monster matchup brewing this Saturday, with the Virginia Cavaliers set to visit the Maryland Terrapins for a 3 p.m. ET start on Big Ten Network.

There’s a lot of recent history between these two teams. They met in the 2021 NCAA Championship, where Virginia took down Maryland 17-16 in a game that came down to the final seconds in East Hartford, CT. Connor Shellenberger — now a senior with the Cavaliers — had six points (4 goals, 2 assists) in that game and was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.

The following year, Maryland swept Virginia on its way to an undefeated title run. The Terps beat the Cavs 23-12 in the Capitol Lacrosse Classic that year, then sent them home after a 19-9 beatdown in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Last year, these two squads met in Charlottesville and gave us an an overtime thriller. Maryland goalie Brian Ruppel made the 2023 TLN Play of the Year with a triple-save in extra time, setting the stage for Daniel Kelly to score the game-winning goal.

Heading into this year’s meeting at College Park, both teams are 5-1 and ranked inside the top 10 of The People’s Top 20. Virginia boasts a top-five scoring offense in lacrosse, while Maryland would rather grind out wins on defense. The Terps are 3-0 in overtime so far this season.

🚨 Chris Gray Traded to ‘Woods

PLL trade alert! On Friday afternoon, the New York Atlas sent attackman Chris Gray (and a third-round pick) to the California Redwoods in exchange for the fifth-overall pick in this year’s draft.

Here’s a look at Gray’s fit in a potential 2024 Redwoods lineup:

If California is able to re-sign All-Star attackman Ryder Garnsey, this Redwoods offense would be stacked.

Gray, 24, was the second-overall pick in the 2022 PLL Draft. He played in college at Boston University and North Carolina, where he broke the NCAA Division I record for career points (401). In 22 games with the Atlas over the past two seasons, Gray racked up 40 goals and 32 assists. His 37 points last season ranked tied for fourth in the PLL with league MVP Tom Schreiber.

🫡 Tucker Durkin’s Retirement

New York Atlas defenseman Tucker Durkin announced his retirement this week. The 33-year-old PLL veteran walked away from the professional game after making six All-Star games and winning the MLL Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

During his playing career, Durkin was known for his leadership and extremely physical style of play. This clip from his days with the Florida Launch perfectly exemplifies his violent style:

Durkin was a two-time William C. Schmeisser Award winner in college at Johns Hopkins. He was also named Best Defenseman at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championship while competing for Team USA.

While Durkin’s fans are sad to see him call it a career, there are probably some PLL attackmen rejoicing that his reign of terror has finally come to an end.
