🧠 What We Learned From CJ Kirst

If you haven’t watched THOUGH X with Cornell’s CJ Kirst yet, stop reading right now and hit play on the video above.

*waits 14 minutes*

Pretty loaded, huh? This episode was an absolute gold mine for any attackman who wants to improve his game. Here are three key on-field learnings Kirst delivered to ESPN Analyst Paul Carcaterra during the episode.

1.) Earning your strong hand: In the episode, Kirst talks a lot about earning his strong left hand while dodging. He describes how he sets up his dodge to get that left hand, then breaks down the counters and double-moves he uses when defenders are over-playing his strength.

2.) Using the back of the net: One thing Kirst does exceptionally well is use the back of the net like a pick while dodging from X. He explains to Carc why it works so well, while also detailing his mental approach to dodging from behind the cage. Every X attackman needs to understand these skills.

3.) Changing levels on your shot: Kirst is one of the most effective “bucket-getters” in college lacrosse, and towards the end of this episode he details a unique way his older brother Cole taught him to change levels on his shot. You just gotta watch this part, then go out and practice it in the backyard.

Kirst dropped a lot of valuable knowledge in this episode, but he also opened up emotionally. He talked about losing his father and how that forged and even stronger bond with his four brothers. He also discussed his personal journey from undersized high school freshman to one of the most physically imposing dodgers in the game today.

This is truly a must-watch episode of THROUGH X.

😱 Massive Upsets & Overtimes!

So, yesterday was kinda crazy. The conference tournament chaos has begun; let’s run through some of the most shocking results and what it could mean for NCAA Selection Sunday and beyond…

Villanova upsets Denver: Denver was the 1-seed in the Big East Tournament and the conference’s only apparent lock to make the NCAA Tournament based on the ever-important RPI metric. The fact that they lost in the semifinal round means there’s a good chance we see multiple Big East teams make the NCAA tournament.

Georgetown beats Providence in Overtime: The Hoyas struggled against Providence in the semifinal round. Although they’ve won each of the past five Big East Tournaments, Georgetown left the door open for Villanova to pull off another upset and steal this conference’s automatic qualifier.

Michigan upsets Hopkins: History is repeating itself, as the Wolverines are playing their best lacrosse in the postseason. Last year, Michigan went on an improbable run to win the Big Ten Championship before shocking Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Penn State blows out Maryland: The Nittany Lions absolutely pummeled the Terps, 19-9. This was technically an upset based on conference tournament seeding, but it wasn’t surprising. Might Penn State be the team that is best-suited to take down the defending NCAA Champions Notre Dame?

The ACC, Ivy League and Patriot League semifinals are all today, so prepare yourself for even more conference tournament craziness.
