๐Ÿ—ฃ THE PEOPLE SELECT NEW NO. 1

Notre Dame Takes Top Spot From Virginia | Penn State Ivy League 'Champs'

For the first time since our preseason poll, someone other than Virginia has claimed the No. 1 spot in The People's Top 20 this week. Start scrolling to see who now sits atop the college lacrosse landscape.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Notre Dame Leaps Virginia

Virginia (6-0) is still the No. 1 team in every major poll, but The People were obviously ready to see a change this week. Over 8,000 fans voted for the No. 1 team on our Instagram story, and Notre Dame (5-0) took 55% of the vote.

The Cavaliers are the only Division I team averaging over 20 goals per game, but the Irish have a much stingier defense. As a result, Notre Dame (+8.4) just barely edges out Virginia (+8.0) for the best average goal differential in the country.

Both ACC squads are currently undefeated, and theyโ€™re slated to meet on March 25 in South Bend. Virginia has to get past Maryland before then, while Notre Dame has a trip to Michigan coming up this weekend. If both teams bring unblemished records into that matchup, that has the potential to be the regular season Game of the Year.

๐Ÿฆ Hopkins Spoils Mikey Powell Day

Saturday was a special day for Syracuse fans, as the Orange honored the legacy of Mikey Powell and raised his No. 22 banner into the rafters at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The only problem is Johns Hopkins didn't care.ย

The Blue Jays took down Syracuse by a final score of 11-9. Hopkins goalie Tim Marcille was brilliant in the win, finishing with 21 saves. He got the best of Syracuse freshman Joey Spallina, who only scored one goal on a game-high eight shots.

Hopkins now stands at 5-3 on the season. The Jays have games against Navy (away) and Delaware (home) coming up, before opening up conference play against Michigan on the road. They look like they'll be serious contenders in the Big Ten.

๐ŸŒฟ Ivy League Champs: Penn State

It's amazing how much can change in the span of one year. Last season, Penn State won just three games and the Ivy League sent six teams to the NCAA tournament. Now fast forward to today, and the Nittany Lions have taken down three straight Ivy opponents.

Here are the results of those games:

Penn State 13, Yale 11 (road win)Penn State 15, Penn 9 (home win)Penn State 10, Cornell 6 (road win)

Penn State may be "Ivy League Champs" right now, but the Big Ten is deep this season and they could easily wind up near the bottom of the conference standings by the end of the season. The good news for this team is that their brand of lacrosse โ€” tough defense led by senior Jack Posey โ€” should travel well wherever they play.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Player of the Week: Andrew McAdorey

Last Friday night, Duke absolutely throttled Loyola 17-9 at Koskinen Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Andrew McAdorey had a career-high nine points in the win.

While Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams command much of the attention at attack, that leaves a lot of room for McAdorey to make plays. He is a skilled offensive facilitator, and he illustrated that with six assists against Loyola. He currently ranks second on the team behind O'Neill with 32 total points (17 goals, 15 assists).

McAdorey is only listed at 5-foot-9 and 190 lbs., but his vision and quickness make him an elite playmaker. He's a major reason why Duke is sitting at 6-1 and riding a four-game winning streak right now.
