  • The Exposed Elbow Award

We are particularly excited to bring you The Exposed Elbow Award, which goes to the grittiest lacrosse player of the year. While most categories only have four nominees, we opened this award up to eight different candidates. Here’s a little bit about each nominee…

Pat Kavanagh: This Tewaaraton Award finalist powered Notre Dame to its first National Championship in program history, and he played in the title game with an artificial hamstring.

Griffin Schutz: This Virginia midfielder is a brutish dodger who went viral for his bloody elbow in a win over Johns Hopkins.

Knox Dent: This military-tough goaltender injured his knee while making an incredible play. Although the injury required surgery, he played through the pain and helped lift Army to an upset win over Maryland in the NCAA Tournament.

Ryan Terefenko: When Team USA needed someone to step up and secure gold in the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship, this SSDM ran through a brutal gauntlet of Canadian checks.

Izzy Scane: After tearing her ACL and missing the entire 2022 season, this Northwestern star broke her own goals record (99), claimed a National Championship and won the Tewaaraton Award.

Connor Maher: This SSDM made one of the most underrated plays in the 2023 PLL Championship, helping the Archers secure victory with his crucial run-out late in the fourth quarter.

Brian Phipps: This recently retired goalie suited up for the Whipsnakes at the 2023 Championship Series, and his legs took an absolute beating in Sixes.

Jack Rowlett: While trying to disrupt a shot from Zed Williams, this Chaos defender ended up with a perfect imprint of a stick head (with the mesh!) on his side.

📊 Schreiber, Terps Dominate Top 50

The Premier Lacrosse League wrapped up The Players Top 50 last week, and Archers midfielder Tom Schreiber came in at No. 1 for the second straight year. Through five PLL seasons, here’s where Schreiber has ranked on this list…

2019: 2nd
2020: 1st
2021: 2nd
2022: 1st
2023: 1st

Schreiber led all midfielders in scoring (37 points), won the regular-season MVP Award and led the Archers to their first PLL Championship in 2023. With nine All-Star appearances under his belt at 31 years old, he is building his case for greatest pro lacrosse player of all time.

While Schreiber tends to dominate The Players Top 50 every year, so do Maryland Terrapins. There were six Terps on this year’s list, extending Maryland’s all-time lead in terms of Top 50 representatives.

Maryland has placed 39 selections on the PLL Top 50 since 2019. The next closest programs are Notre Dame and Duke, with 21 selections each.

⚡️ 2024 PLL Champ Series Rosters

On Monday, the PLL announced 12-man rosters for each of the four teams participating in the 2024 Championship Series. Here’s a look at who the Utah Archers, Philadelphia Waterdogs, Boston Cannons and California Redwoods are bringing to D.C. next February…

The Archers are the only team returning after playing in last year’s Championship Series, so that could give them an advantage heading into this year’s event. Their roster is highlighted by 2021 PLL Attackman of the Year Grant Ament.

Romar Dennis, who won the Golden Stick Award with the Atlas last year, will be with the Redwoods this time around. The PLL Sixes format, which includes a 13-yard two-point arc, is built for players like Dennis to dominate.

It will be interesting to see other stars such as Rob Pannell, Michael Sowers and Asher Nolting make their PLL Sixes debut at Champ Series next February.

🤯 Rookie Simmons Stunning NLL

Through the first few weeks of the 2023-24 NLL season, Albany Firewolves rookie Alex Simmons is on an absolute tear. The former Denver/Syracuse standout is tied for the league lead in both goals (10) and total points (20).

This should come as no surprise, as Simmons was a highlight machine for the Orange last spring…

Simmons was the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NLL Draft, and now he has his Firewolves off to a league-best 3-0 start. NLL writer Adam Levi pointed out on Twitter/X that Simmons is on pace for 60 goals this season, which would shatter Paul Gait’s rookie record of 47 goals set back in 1991.
