Virginia Reclaims No. 1 Spot | Dartmouth Wins an Ivy League Game & More

Wondering who the best team in NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse is heading into April? Yeah, so are we. The past month has yielded more confusion than clarity. If you haven't been following the game of "Rock, Paper, Scissors," let us fill you in...

β–ͺ️ March 4: Notre Dame beats Maryland, 13-12 (3OT)β–ͺ️ March 18: Maryland beats Virginia, 14-13 (OT)β–ͺ️ March 25: Virginia beats Notre Dame, 15-10

As the defending national champions, Maryland entered the season as the No. 1 team in The People's Top 20. Shortly after that, Virginia overtook the Terps for the top spot. Notre Dame swept in and stole No. 1 a couple weeks ago, and now the Cavaliers are back on top in the latest edition of our poll.

Here's how The People voted this week:

Things could get even more confusing by the end of the week. Virginia (7-1) hosts No. 4 Duke (9-1) on Friday night, and the Hoos have not defeated the Blue Devils in the regular season since 2004. If Duke wins again, they'll have a legitimate case for the No. 1 spot.

But, we'll cross that crazy bridge when we get to it. In the meantime, let's dive into some other headlines...

πŸ€– CJ Kirst...Scoring MACHINE

Cornell attackman CJ Kirst literally cannot stop putting the ball in the back of the net. It's becoming a problem (for everyone other than the Big Red). He currently leads all D1 players with an average of 4.86 goals per game.

Here's what his game log looks like:

β–ͺ️ Game 1: 6 goals (at Albany)β–ͺ️ Game 2:Β 3 goals (vs. Lehigh)β–ͺ️ Game 3: 7Β goals (at Hobart)β–ͺ️ Game 4: 4 goals (at Ohio State)β–ͺ️ Game 5: 2 goals (vs. Penn State)β–ͺ️ Game 6: 5 goals (at Yale)β–ͺ️ Game 7: 7 goals (vs. Penn)

Kirst has scored five or more goals in more than half of his outings, and Penn State is the only team that has stopped him from recording a hat trick. His seven-goal performance against Penn on Sunday was a masterclass in dodging from the wing.

As Cornell creates some separation in the Ivy League, Kirst is building a convincing case for this year's Tewaaraton Award.

⭐️ POTW: Coulter Mackesy

Another Ivy League attackman who scored in bunches this week was Princeton's Coulter Mackesy, who dropped eight goals and two assists in a 23-10 win over Yale on Saturday.

Mackesy scored each of Princeton's first five goals versus Yale, helping spark a Tigers team that had previously lost four games in a row. Three of his eight goals were man-up rips, but he also had some impressive wing dodges and drives off of end-line restarts.

Mackesy is only a sophomore, but he may have to put the team on his back more often moving forward. He currently has 27 goals on the season; that's almost double Princeton's second leading scorer (Alexander Vardaro, 14).

πŸŽ‰ Party On, Dartmouth!

Dartmouth is partying like it's 2015. Why? Because the Big Green just won their first Ivy League game in eight years.

Here's the moment Dartmouth took down Harvard in overtime, snapping a 35-game losing streak vs. Ivy opponents:

Dartmouth is now 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in Ivy League play. They still only have an 18 percent chance of earning a berth in the conference tournament, according to simulations run by Lacrosse Reference, but this team is clearly on the rise.

We're enjoying the show β€” but for the sake of our next story, we kindly ask that the Big Green keep the noise to a minimum...

🀫 Shh! Brown Roars Back

Earlier this month, Brown University suspended seven lacrosse players due to a noise complaint stemming from a party thrown on Jan. 28, according to a report from Inside Lacrosse. After three straight losses, the suspensions were lifted and Brown immediately upset a top-10 ranked Villanova team, 13-11, on the road.

Devon McLane recorded a team-high six points (three goals, three assists) in his first game back from suspension, but the story of the game was the performance of Connor Theriault in cage. The junior goalkeeper absolutely stymied Nova's offense, finishing the game with 22 saves.

Brown randomly caught fire in April of last season, knocking off Penn, Yale and Cornell in succession. Might we see history repeat itself next month?
