NEW THROWBACKS! 👀 UVA x TLN

New Virginia Uniforms Honor 1999 Championship Team | TLN Retro Replica Uniforms 20% OFF

The Virginia Cavaliers are turning back the clock to 1999 this week. On Thursday, the team revealed new throwback uniforms designed to honor the ‘99 squad that won the NCAA Championship over Syracuse.

Here’s how Virginia unveiled the uniforms…

That ‘99 Virginia team was the first of four to win a National Championship during the tenure of former head coach Dom Starsia. Attackman Conor Gill was the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament as a freshman that year.

This year’s Virginia team is 9-1 and opening up ACC play at home against North Carolina on Saturday. The Cavaliers currently rank No. 2 in The People’s Top 20, behind only Notre Dame.

Like Virginia, we at TLN also enjoy honoring the past. That’s why we’re offering 20 percent off all Retro Replica Jerseys in the TLN shop right now. Available schools include Virginia, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Maryland, Albany, Penn State and Cornell.

🤯 Game Of The Year!?

On Tuesday evening, Cornell beat Syracuse in what many are calling the Game of the Year. This game featured 35 total goals, 13 total penalties, two overtime periods and a coach ejection.

The final minute of regulation was one of the wildest sequences you’ll ever see. Cornell scored twice to tie the game and take the lead with 10 seconds left, then Syracuse scored a last-second goal to force overtime.

Watch the sequence here…

Cornell trailed 7-0 in the first quarter of this game and came all the way back to win in double-overtime. The ejection of Syracuse offensive coordinator Pat March in the final minute of the first quarter was both controversial and not entirely explained on the broadcast.

“I don’t even know what the call was, to be honest, head coach Gary Gait said after the game,” per Syracuse.com. “I think the ref put his hand in his face, something happened, I’m not exactly sure what, I was in front of [March]. But that’s something we’ll deal with. I’m positive it will never happen again … It was an interesting situation. We’ll just say that.”

Returning Tewaaraton Award finalist CJ Kirst was essential to Cornell’s comeback efforts. He had five goals and an assist, including the game-winner in the second overtime period.

You can watch all five of Kirst’s goals vs. Syracuse in the video below.

📈 Mercyhurst Going Division I

On Thursday, Mercyhurst University announced its plans to make the leap to NCAA Division I from Division II. Next season, the Lakers will compete in the Northeast Conference.

Mercyhurst has appeared in four NCAA Division II National Championships since 2007, including last year against Lenoir-Rhyne. The only time the Lakers won the D2 title was in 2011 against Adelphi.

Mercyhurst joins programs such as Merrimack and Le Moyne, which were once D2 powerhouses and are now competing at the D1 level. Other universities that recently made the leap from D2 to D1 are Lindenwood (dropping men’s lacrosse after this season) and Queens.

Now in their final D2 season, Mercyhurst is 7-3 (4-0 in G-MAC). The Lakers currently rank No. 11 in in the Inside Lacrosse NCAA Division II media poll.

🧐 Owen Duffy vs. Joey Spallina

An interesting debate is forming on social media over two of the game’s brightest young stars. UNC’s Owen Duffy is having a great freshman season after being ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the country by Inside Lacrosse, while Joey Spallina (ranked No. 1 the year before) continues to excel at Syracuse.

So, which player would you rather build a team around: Duffy or Spallina?

Spallina, who has played 13 games in 2024, currently leads all of Division I Men’s Lacrosse with 70 points (28 goals, 42 assists) — that’s 13 more than reigning Tewaaraton Award winner Brennan O’Neill.

Duffy, on the other hand, has produced 46 points (28 goals, 18 assists) in three fewer games. From a points-per-game perspective, Duffy is keeping pace with some of the best players in college lacrosse.

After dropping seven points against Cornell on Tuesday, Spallina is outpacing all the names on the list above with 5.38 points per game.

The Duffy vs. Spallina debate will be an interesting one to follow over the next week. They’re scheduled to meet in a head-to-head matchup at Chapel Hill on Saturday, April 13.
